At a time when many in our community are facing fear, disconnection, economic hardship and political threat, Imani Community Church is continuing its Faith Not Fear conversation series to provide space for collective reflection, connection, and action. These gatherings support Imani’s theme this year of ‘Becoming sanctuary, in God, with one another, to change the world.

Becoming sanctuary, therefore, is not just a place of refuge, it’s a source of courage and community strength. This fall’s gathering comes in response to alarming developments at the federal level, including the passage of a spending bill with deep cuts to essential programs, massive funding for militarization and threats to deploy the National Guard in cities like Oakland. These actions will have direct, local consequences — and we believe the community must be informed, connected, and ready.

In November, we are featuring a Know Your Rights training offered by APTP (Anti-police Terror Project). Following the training, participants will engage in small group conversations with others who live in their neighborhood. These discussions will focus on urgent local concerns from housing and healthcare to immigration, education, and safety, and will support attendees in staying connected with one another and creating collective safety and support.

The goal is for everyone to leave feeling hopeful, connected, and equipped with concrete actions they can take. The event is rooted in the belief that spiritual grounding and civic engagement must go hand in hand, and that by facing this moment together, we can respond not with fear, but with faith.
